In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths (Proverbs 3:6, NKJV).

Below, I have shared five steps that help us receive divine direction in any matter. Of course, the Word of God is most prominent. This explains why all believers are admonished to read the Bible daily. Second, while we read the Bible, the Holy Spirit has an opportunity to speak to us and point out scriptures. Just recently, I started to study one topic in my Bible but found myself meditating a new scripture that was given to me (impromptu by God), in answer to my prayers. The scripture that was shown to me turned my life around!

A well-known pastor, the late George Muller, was known for keeping a prayer request journal. Most importantly, he was known for the fact that so many of his prayers were answered. He was truly a man of faith. When he explained his method for seeking direction, he stated that our reasoning must include the Word of God (as stated in the Bible) and what the Holy Spirit is telling us (in our hearts). The Word of God and the Spirit of God never contradicts themselves.

In addition to studying the Word, it is vital to know and associate with trusted men and women of God. God is our Father, but His Spirit often leads us to an earthly spiritual father, such as a pastor at a local church.

Too many young believers avoid church, not knowing that through church membership, they can directly connect with loving spiritual fathers (God Himself, pastors, ministers, elders). Additionally, most churches offer free counseling from a pastor or associate minister.

Here are the five questions we can ask ourselves to unveil divine direction.

1. THE BIBLE – What does the Bible say? What actual scriptures apply?
2. THE HOLY SPIRIT – Have I prayed and asked God directly what I should do? What is the Holy Spirit urging me to do?
3. CIRCUMSTANCES – Have I considered all the options? Write down the options and the pros and cons of each.
4. WISE COUNSEL – Do I have all the facts I need to make this decision? Would additional information be helpful? Without procrastinating, should I get more information before I decide? Should I seek counsel from a spiritual leader or professional that I trust? What information would help me decide? Write it down.
5. STEPPING OUT IN FAITH – If I made a decision at this moment (based on the Bible, God’s leading, and the facts I have), what should I do? Is this solution entirely honorable?

Finally, we must be careful to avoid procrastination. Faith without action is no faith at all (James 2:17). Too many of us have asked God for something but have been waiting on Him for months or years. Or worst still, we may have given up all hope. What?

We must go back to the drawing board and ask God, “Lord, what did you tell me to do? Where did I miss it?” He may want us to work on our character or do something that makes no sense at all.

Trust in the LORD with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding (Proverbs 3:5, NLT).

God may tell us to stop, to go forth, to obtain more information, to change directions, to wait or give us other instructions. Through prayer though, we give Him an opportunity to speak.I

have often found that even if I’m not able to start today, God will give me an interim assignment like preparation, taking baby steps, prayer, fasting, or giving. The bottom line is hearing God, which is not difficult if we are willing to sit down (quietly) and listen.

“Call upon Me in the day of trouble: I shall rescue you, and you will honor Me” (Psalm 50:15, NASB).
